About
Dedicated to bettering our community and environment through art and ideas, while continuing the legacy of Paul Manship and preserving this unique property.
Manship Artists Residency is dedicated to the preservation of an environmentally- and historically significant site that has been given new life as an international, interdisciplinary artists residency for the benefit of the community and visitors to Cape Ann.
Manship Artists values those who challenge us to think differently and aims to create an environment where creativity and questions are encouraged and where all are welcome.
This not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization was formed in 2015 to preserve and protect a 15+ acre, quarried landscape on Boston’s North Shore and to continue the legacy of the Manship family of artists: Paul, John, and Margaret; all of whom found community and great inspiration while living and working on Cape Ann.
Sculptor Paul Manship is best known for the Prometheus Fountain in Rockefeller Center and the Celestial Sphere at the UN in Geneva, Switzerland. Paul’s son, John Manship, was an accomplished painter, and John’s wife, Margaret Cassidy, was a sculptor who assisted on major public works in Italy, including a monument in St. Peter’s Basilica.
Located in Lanesville, a fishing and artist village with a rich history, the Manship Artists Residency was established by a dedicated group of artists, community activists, and professionals, working together with Manship and Cassidy descendants, to ensure that the Manship family retreat continues to inspire and nourish future generations of artists and thought leaders.
The Manship Artists Residency aims to enrich and further Cape Ann’s cultural heritage with a new group of innovators, writers, visual artists and scholars, providing the local and global artist community space dedicated to self-discovery and creative exploration.
Through its artist residency and thoughtful programming, Manship Artists is protecting our cultural and natural heritage while preserving the characteristic landscape of Cape Ann that has for generations been a favorite retreat for artists of all genres and nationalities.
When we work together, the legacy we leave our children reflects a new sustainability, fellowship, and sense of place. It’s time for passion with purpose!
